This Young Feminist is Making Moves #TWT

You have probably heard all about this 12 year old girl, who founded her own book drive, #1000BlackGirlsBooks, which asked for novels featuring black girls as the protagonists. This girl has also appeared on The Ellen Show, and interviewed former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Our terrific woman this Tuesday is Marley Dias!

I am so happy that there are intelligent girls making a difference at a young age. Marley Dias started her book drive when she was eleven years old. While in fifth grade, she realized black girls weren’t being represented in the books they would read in school. Marley wanted to make sure her fellow classmates were receiving the right resources and were exposed to books with diverse characters as the protagonists. After posting her book drive on Twitter, many people saw it and supported her. “Next thing I knew Fox 29 Philadelphia was calling, and then I got a laptop and $10,000 on The Ellen Show. The rest was history, as they say,” Marley stated in an interview with InStyle.

Now at twelve years old, Marley landed a book deal with Scholastic and came out with her novel Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!, in January. This guide is for ages 10 and up to take the things that they love to do and combine social media to help other people like them.

Marley Dias shows that you can start changing the world at any age. She has inspired and motivated many people, younger and older, including myself. If you aren’t happy with your circumstances, then you should try to fix it. That is what Marley did; she wasn’t happy reading books about just “white boys and their dog,” so she created a book drive to collect books that are more diverse in characters and culture. Marley Dias is a girl with beauty and brains!
