If you were watching the 2018 U.S. Open then you saw how intense the match was.  Naomi Osaka is now the first Japanese-Haitian woman to be a Grand Slam Champion.

The 2018 U.S. Open was not the first time Naomi and Serena had a match together. Naomi beat Serena at the Miami Masters in March. Naomi has been playing tennis professionally since 2013 but it wasn’t until last year when this beauty became an international sensation! She defeated the highly-seasoned player, Angelique Kerber, in the first round of last years finals.

My favorite thing about Naomi is that she is proud of both, her Haitian and Japanese backgrounds. One time while being interviewed after a match, Naomi was asked, “Talk about your relationship with Japanese culture and U.S. culture. How did both cultures make you who you are?” She replied with, ““My dad’s Haitian, so I grew up in a Haitian household in New York. I lived with my grandma. And my mom’s Japanese and I grew up with the Japanese culture too, and if you’re saying American, I guess because I lived in America, I also have that too . . . I hope I answered your question. I don’t know.” Naomi let it be known that she was also Haitian and both cultures make her who she is today.

Congrats to Naomi for winning her first Grand Slam, this is one of many more! Also, congrats to Serena Williams, who is a 23 times Gram Slam winner, for great sportsmanship. Both ladies are star players and strong women. I love how congratulating Serena was to Naomi especially because it exemplified how supportive women are to one other. Both are true examples of being girls with beauty and brains.
