This beauty is an actress and screenwriter who is best known for her hit Netflix show, “Master of None,” for which she won an Emmy for in 2017. Our terrific woman this Tuesday is Lena Waithe, a beauty who is unapologetically herself and an inspiration to many.
Lena had her heart set on screenwriting since she was very young. She started from nothing and no connections but with determination she was able to reach success. Lena has assisted famous directors like, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Ava DuVernay.
Lena has also wrote for Fox and Nickelodeon and produced a variety of web series and short films as she was working her way up in the industry. Lena is best known for the Netflix series, “Master of None,” which she wrote the “Thanksgiving” episode for. That contribution won her an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, making her the first black female ever to have won that award. Her most recent project is The Chi, which airs on Showtime and also stars in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.
Recently, Lena has chopped her hair, something that many people tried to define her with. At the Black Girls Rock! Awards she gave a beautiful speech when receiving her Shot Caller award.
“I was holding on to a piece of myself that felt feminine. And that piece of femininity made people feel comfortable,” Lena mentioned. “But then I came to the realization that that’s not my job. I don’t have to make people feel comfortable with the way I choose to walk through the world. So I decided to get free. For me, it was hair. For you, it might be something else. But whatever it is, I want to encourage you to stop letting it hold you captive…I want you to get free of your narrative.”
I was fortunate to be at the Black Girls Rock! Award show to see Lena recite her speech live, and it was so moving. Like she said, never let people’s opinions and desires prevent you from being yourself. Lena Waithe is a girls with beauty and brains.
