The Annulment of More Than 850 Child Marriages #TWT

More than half of Malawi’s girls are married before they are 18 years old. As of 2016, Theresa Kachindamoto, the senior chief in the Dedza District of Central Malawi, annulled more than 850 child marriages. She also sent hundreds of them back to school and worked on diminishing rituals that require young girls to go to sexual initiation camps.

Unfortunately, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and has an HIV infection rate of 10% of the population. In 2015, Kachindamoto was able to get a law passed that forbade marriage before the age of 18. However, with a parent’s consent, child marriage is still legal. Kachindamoto is trying her best to make sure as many kids are going to school as opposed to being sexually abused and loitered at home.

It’s crazy to think about, but these child marriages were actually regulated by previous chiefs before Kachindamoto rather than civil marriages. Therefore, she fired four sub-chiefs responsible for areas where child marriages still occurred.

Chief Kachindamoto has worked with groups of mothers, teachers, village development committees, and religious leaders to prevent such young marriages from continuing. She has inspired many other traditional leaders all over the world to take action in annulling child marriages and has UN Women and UNICEF working with her to end such terrible traditions. She believes that if you “educate a girl and you educate the whole area… you educate the world.”Image result for chief theresa kachindamoto

Chief Theresa Kachindamoto is an admiration internationally for changing the lives of so many young women, making sure they have a chance to a bright future. There is no doubt that she is a girl with beauty and brains!

Terrific Woman Tuesday

Hello Beauties! Every Tuesday I will be giving you facts about an inspiring woman! The series will be called #TerrificWomanTuesday, so tune in every Tuesday to get your weekly facts about an inspiring/powerful woman!

This Tuesday I’m giving you facts about the queen of all media!! This Beauty is Oprah Winfrey. I am sure you all know who she is, but did you know that in 1993 Bill Clinton honored Oprah by signing into the law that is now known as the “Oprah Bill.” This bill created a national database that allows people to search for child abusers. She also became the first African-American woman on Forbes magazine’s “World’s Richest People” list in 2003. Wow!! In 2007, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opened in South Africa. The school houses 152 girls from different backgrounds and provides them with an education. Oprah Winfrey every year raises the bar for woman, showing us that with hard work anything is possible. At the Golden Globes last Sunday, Oprah became the first black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award. She also gave a speech at the Golden Globes, which was absolutely iconic. Here is one of my favorite quotes from her unforgettable speech! “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud, and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories.” Oprah Winfrey continues to inspire and give hope to women all over the world! Oprah Winfrey is a girl with beauty and brains.
