“There’s a Glitch in our Online Communities” #TWT

In 2017, a brilliant organization named Glitch was created. Seyi Akiwowo, who is 28 years old, is the one behind the organization and designed it to end online abuse.

Did you know that women are 27 times more likely to be harassed online than men, and if you’re a women of color it is a lot worse?

Seyi Akiwowo experienced online abuse herself and felt that there wasn’t much guidance or anyone to help her. She decided to take matters into her own hands and started Glitch to support women and girls who are victims of online abuse as well as help them stand up for their rights. Through many online campaigns and media coverage, Glitch was finally able to get social media platforms to take action.

Aside from Glitch, Seyi was elected as the youngest black female councillor in east London in 2014 and last year, she was named Amnesty international’s Human Rights Defender.

It is so inspiring for Seyi to rise from her trauma and create a platform to help prevent girls from online harassment, especially because social media is prominent in our generation. I admire her strength and her ability to be an advocate for all women. Seyi Akiwowo is a girl with beauty and brains!

This Dynamic Sister Duo #TWF

This dynamic duo went from singing covers of Beyoncé songs on YouTube to being signed to Beyoncé’s label, Parkwood Entertainment. Our terrific women this Friday are Chloe and Halle Bailey.

They signed to Parkwood Entertainment in 2013 when their rendition of Beyoncé’s song “Pretty Hurts” went viral. Ever since then they have opened for Beyoncé on tour, booked acting jobs, performed at Coachella, and dropped an album.

Chloe x Halle’s music is very unique and always have a powerful message behind it. Their song, “Warrior,” which is featured in the Disney movie, Wrinkle of Time, was about the strong women in their life. It emphasized the importance of uplifting women and how we can be just as ‘strong’ as men.

Chloe x Halle are also series regulars on the Black-ish spin off, Grown-ish. They also wrote and sing the theme song of the show, “Grown.” Many believe these sisters are twins however, they are actually two years apart. Chloe is 20 years old and Halle is 18. On Grown-ish however, their characters are twins.

These girls are an inspiration and a great example of what hard work looks like. They recently were nominated for 2 Grammys and I couldn’t be more excited for them. I appreciate their music and what they stand for. Chloe x Halle are definitely girls with beauty and brains.

The director for Selma, was originally Lee Daniels, but because of creative differences with the production team, Oyelowo, the leading actor, was able to convince the production company to bring Ava on board as director. She also rewrote the script but didn’t receive screenwriter credit.

She’s an Advocate for Feminism in the Comics Industry #TWT

This beauty has changed the comic book business for good by creating a female Muslim superhero. Our terrific woman this Tuesday is G. Willow Wilson.

G. Willow Wilson has been reading comic books since she was a little girl. Her first encounter with comics was when she read an anti-smoking pamphlet featuring X-Men. From that point on, Wilson loved comic books, but she noticed that only boys were being spotlighted as the heroes.

Wilson is the writer behind Marvel’s series, Ms. Marvel, which features a Muslim girl with superpowers. Not only does she touch on girl power but her series also touches on religion. Wilson is also the creator and writer behind Marvel’s series, A-Force, which is about an all-girls superhero team. She uses her comic books as a platform to stop discrimination and to acknowledge what girls are capable of. Ms. Marvel received a lot of negativity, but it also was named one of Marvel’s bestselling series.

Thank you, Wilson, for writing about topics that many authors are too uncomfortable to talk about. G. Willow Wilson is a girl with beauty and brains!
