Selma, an Oscar-winning historical drama; 13TH, an Oscar-nominated justice documentary; and Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, were all directed by the same game-changing woman. This Beauty is a director, producer, writer, marketer, and film distributor. Our terrific woman this Tuesday is Ava DuVernay!

Ava worked in film publicity before she started the DuVernay Agency, which specialized in movie marketing for African-American audiences. She started making her own short films like My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women in Hip Hop, which aired on BET in 2010.

Soon after that, Ava’s career was taking off!! She directed an episode of  Scandal, starring Kerry Washington, and also released the ESPN documentary Venus Vs. The documentary followed Venus William’s fight for pay equity for female tennis players.

The director for Selma, was originally Lee Daniels, but because of creative differences with the production team, Oyelowo, the leading actor, was able to convince the production company to bring Ava on board as director. She also rewrote the script but didn’t receive screenwriter credit.

Ava has made history by becoming the first African-American woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director. And she is the first African-American woman to direct a $100 million-plus movie, which was A Wrinkle in Time.
